Psychological and Support Counseling with a Humanistic-Existential Approach
The Humanistic-Existential psychology approach places the human being, considered in their uniqueness and complexity, at the center.
In contrast to a mechanistic view, it values the capacity for self-actualization, choice and creativity for the development of personal potential. It is therefore essential to consider the person as an active part of the psychological session, whose goal is to facilitate the overcoming of suffering, a consequence of the blockage in the natural growth path that human beings tend toward. Through this non-judgmental approach, which considers the human being in their totality, personal resources and as-yet-unexpressed potential are rediscovered, thus valuing the uniqueness of the person.
The Humanistic-Existential approach integrates three dimensions:
– The empathic dimension, which fosters contact between psychologist and patient;
– The bodily dimension, which, through Bioenergetics, visualization and relaxation techniques, allows for identifying the physical tensions where psychological blocks are anchored;
– The Existential dimension, which allows one to see the deep roots of human suffering.
This approach also makes it possible to consider spiritual aspects as resources inherent in the human being, waiting to be rediscovered.
“People have within themselves vast resources for understanding themselves and for changing their self-concept, their attitudes and their basic behavior. These resources can emerge in a climate of facilitating psychological attitudes” –C. Rogers
